You are members, one of another.”(3:195)
There is no difference between the two as
regards status, rights and blessings both in this world and
in the Hereafter. In fact, in ancient times, Women had come
to be considered inferior and were deprived, among other things,
of the right to inherit property. Neither did it distinguish
between men and women as regards status, right and blessing,
both in this world and the Hereafter. Both were considered
equal participants in the carrying out of the functions of
daily living. As is mentioned in the above verse of the Quran
.
The first verse that we find in the Quran
on this subject is as follows:
‘Mankind, fear your lord who created you from one soul
and created man’s mate from the same soul, from these
two scattering on earth many men and women .Fear God, in whose
name you entreat one another, and be careful not to sever
your ties of kinship, God is watching over what you do .’(4:1)
This verse of the Quran tells us that God has created man
and women from the same soul, that is, from the same substance.
The entire human race has come from Adam and Eve, the first
man and the first women. Looked at in this manner, human beings
on this earth are blood brothers and blood sister.
Another verse of the Quran reads:
The word ‘comfort ‘ relates to
all the activities of life, meaning thereby that God has created
men and women in such a way that they assist one another in
all matters of life in order to go on life’ s journey
peacefully .
Some More Verses of the Quran
Here are some further quotations from the
Quran and hadith regarding the position of women in Islam.
Women shall with justice have rights similar
to those exercised against them. (2:228)
Women shall have a have a share in what their
parents and kinsmen leave ; whether it be little or much,
it is legally their .(4:7)
Those that have faith and do good works, both
men and women, shall enter the Gardens of Paradise and receive
blessings without measure.(40:20)
Words of the Prophet Muhammad
The following traditions of the Prophet indicate
the elevated function of women in Islam:
Fear god in respect of women.
Heaven lies beneath the feet of mothers. (That is, those who
serve their mothers well
Are deserving of Paradise.)
The best among you is he who is best for his family. For my
family, I am the best of all of you.
The most perfect man of religion is one who excels in character.
The best among you is he gives the best treatment to his womenfolk.
These Quranic verses and sayings of the prophet
of Islam make it clear that, although males and females differ
from one another biologically, they are equal in terms of
human status. No distinction is made between women and men
as regards their respective right. This is all to the good
if they are to be lifetime companions.
In Islam, therefore a women enjoys the same
status as that of a man. There is no difference between man
and women as regards status, rights and blessings, both in
this world and in the hereafter. The difference is only in
‘role’. Otherwise, both are considered equal participants
in the carrying out of the functions of daily living.
So we can say that men and women are, “Equal
in respect and different in role”.
