SPIRITULISM AND QURAN

By
Rajat Malhotra

What is spirituality?

Spirituality --- rabbaniat -------- means ‘Giving in god.’ The spiritually inclined elevate themselves’ so that they begin to live on a higher divine plane.

They remain undisturbed in face of provocation, their mental balance is not upset by unpleasant experiences, and the distasteful behavior of other does not arouse any feelings of anger or revenge in them. Living strictly by their principles, their mental level becomes so high that the stone cast by others cannot reach them. In spirituality they find such sublimity that all else pales into insignificance. Spirituality in itself is a great virtue that the seeker after divine bliss need quest no further.

SPIRTUAL PROGRESS

The actual target of Islamic is Spiritual progress. In the Quran it is mentioned as purification and cleansing (9:103). Every person is born on nature but the environment conditions him. It can be compared with the bulb of the onion which lays hidden under the layers of its peels similarly the real personality of a man gets covered by layers of conditioning, therefore purification means to decondition oneself or-engineer ones mind so as to go back to ones real personality or true nature which a person is born with. However this is not so easy to achieve and requires introspection and immense courage to find one’ s mistakes and accept by saying openly that “I was wrong “. It is this price of sincerity and honesty which helps a person attain spiritual development through conscious efforts and is called in Quran as coming before one’s Lord with a “pure heart” (26:89)

ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY
The Islamic concept of spiritualism is based on the concept of duality of reality _____that the Creator and the Creature are completely separate from one another. God, according to this concept, has a real and eternal existence based on taw heed or monotheism. According to monotheism, God is one and has no partner. He created all things and has complete control over the universe. As the Creator of all things, He is distinct from all He has created. His creatures, in their seemingly independent existence, totally depend upon the will of God. The sole possessor of all power; God, has created man to live for a specific period of time, during which he is sent into the world to be tested.
It is this concept of duality, which sets the Semitic religions ____ Judaism, Christianity and Islam _ apart from the Aryan religions _____ Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism ___ in which God is a symbol. God in Islam is a real and independent personality whereas in Aryan religion it is an all- pervading spirit.

ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY & THE CREATION PLAN OF GOD
The existence of man is such a unique phenomenon that no other such example can be found throughout the vastness of the cosmos. Man is rightly called the ‘best of all creations’, which means the best and most meaningful ‘being’ among all the things created. Such a meaningful being cannot have been created without a purpose.

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL JOURNEY IN ISLAM?
The spiritual journey is entirely entirely intellectual in nature. Its quest is two fold, one is to solve the riddle of why, all men and women undergo negative experiences in this world and the other is to offer positive solutions. It addresses the paradox of human beings having been given the freedom to make their own moral choice, and their frequent misuse of this freedom – a course of action which causes them to repeatedly face situations in which people do each other harm; losses are incurred because of others’ injustice; severe provocations are suffered because of untoward experiences.

According to a hadith the prophet of Islam said that God is best pleased when man prays to him for peace (AL-Timrizi). God likes peace. The prophet frequently used to say this prayer:
“O God! You are peace, and peace is from you O God, help us to live with peace and reside in the home of peace, O Lord of Majesty and Glory.”
